Could we walk through responsibilities and growth first?” This primes a consultative tone, reduces anchoring risk, and positions you as thoughtful rather than transactional while still signaling genuine enthusiasm.
When pressed for a figure too early, protect flexibility without stonewalling. Use: “I’m still developing a deeper understanding of scope and success metrics. Would you be open to sharing the band for this level?” You invite transparency, keep options open, and avoid underselling before value is clear.
Stay curious. Ask: “I appreciate the clarity. If base is fixed, what flexibility might exist in sign-on, start date, or first review timing?” This respectfully tests boundaries and often surfaces pockets of flexibility that were not initially offered, without pitting you against internal policies.
If the company cannot adjust base, propose adjacent value: relocation stipends, learning budgets, equipment upgrades, mentorship commitments, or an earlier performance review. Framing these as enablers of faster ramp and impact shows maturity and can unlock meaningful wins even when headline numbers cannot move.
Deadlines create stress that favors the status quo. Respond with gratitude and a reasonable ask: “I’m excited and want to make a thoughtful decision. Could we extend through Friday so I can finish due diligence?” Most teams prefer a calm, committed hire over a rushed acceptance.
